MopedShack.com - Tips - Change your CVT Belt without Tools or Removing any Pulleys..
Change your moped or scooter CVT belt without Tools or Removing any Pulleys:

Yes you can change the CVT Belt on most scooters or mopeds while on the road or at home without any special tools being used except the tools needed to remove the cover. You don't need an impact wrench or special pulley removal tools to do the job.. And you don't have to remove the variator or the clutch pulley to get the CVT belt off or to put a new one on.

How to Change the CVT Belt without using any special tools:
Remove any plastic body-parts and the kick-start lever if you have one then take off the CVT cover. Clean any gasket material from the cover and the housing and blow-out any dust or debris using compressed air, if you on the road do the best you can here in regards to cleaning. Now take a look at the rear clutch pulley, there is a gap between where the belt rides, the normal position is near the top or outmost point within about an inch of the top of the pulley.

Tip: Simply grab the pulley and squeeze fairly hard compressing the clutch-springs while turning the clutch to the right separating the pulley halves, this allows the CVT belt to slip down-inside the pulley and become very loose. At this point you should be able to slip the CVT belt off over the front variator pulley without to much trouble.. Sometimes you might need a screwdriver to help the belt off the variator front pulley.

Important Note: Before you remove the old CVT belt make sure you use a small wedge or block about the same width as a CVT belt to hold-open the front variator pulley halves.. This is very important make sure the variator halves stay open or apart while changing the CVT belt, using a block of cardboard or something that will not let the two halves come together.. If the halves of the front variator pulley are allowed to come together, you variator weights will slip-out of alignment and you variator will need to be removed to fix this. Not something you would want to have happen on the side of the road or on a long trip, so please don't forget this step.

Also Note: Some Scooters / Mopeds this method of changing the CVT Belt doesn't work simply because some scooters don't have enough room between the housing and the variator pulley to slip the belt off and over that pulley.. And you need to remove the variator pulley and or clutch or both to change belts.
